MKDC were appointed by MercyCare to design and project manage the refurbishment of their Residential Aged Care Facility in Wembley. MKDC worked closely with the client to develop a staged refurbishment strategy that encompassed both the changing needs of residents, family, visitors and staff, as well as looking for opportunities to create more communal areas, bedrooms and ensuites within the existing facility. The refurbishment very much focussed on improving the visitor interface, as well as creating a variety of destinations within the facility that are welcoming and nurturing and contribute to the health and well-being of residents.
Themes of placemaking and memory were referenced in the design and were the basis of the finishes and materials selection for each area, as well as adhering to dementia design principles. These principles were thoroughly researched by MKDC and formed the basis for a design guidelines document that was created for MercyCare and will be used for other MercyCare sites in the future.
